The age of consoles

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a good example of how the gaming market is being shifted from PC to consoles. After playing both the console version and PC version of COD: Modern Warfare 2, I can definitely say that the PC version is a direct port of the console version. The PC version is secondary in mind when the developers were developing the game.

So what if its a port? After all there are lots of console games being ported over to PC platform each year. What's the big deal for COD: MW2? The problem is Call of Duty series was originally developed for PC (using the Quake 3 arena engine) and eventually got popular on the PC platform. It had a huge fan following on the PC platform. Instead of the console version being secondary to the PC version, this time its the opposite! Remember, this is not Halo. This game has its roots in the PC platform.

What does this signify? There was once a time where people just thought that FPS will always be best played on the PC and its impossible to play FPS games using a controller with 2 joysticks. But apparently market forces is able to change this perception. The console market is absolutely larger than PC market. This is the reality and game makers have to come to terms with this new reality. They are simply going where the money is.

What will be left of gaming on PC? I think gaming will never go away on PC. After all, there are still tons of casual flash games, not to mention Facebook games. But those are just casual games. What about "hardcore" games for PC? One word (uhh... acronym), MMORPG. At least for now, PC is still home to casual flash games and MMORPG games.
